Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg, Paris France

Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg

Paris, France

Walking distance to just about everything, Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg is a dream place to stay. A wonderful mix of 19th century lavish and 50’s inspired chic the hotel screams fashion lives here. The hotel was once two mansions, one from the 18th century, the other the 19th century. Elements remain but over all feel is luscious contemporary design. Not surprising. Architect designer Didier Gomez started his career as an opera singer. Lavish set must have inspired him. Rooms are 18th glam…pastel colors, opulent fabrics, classic touches. Public spaces are art deco-y black and white, highlights of gold and spectacular fashion photos. The links with style run deep. Back in 1830 the now lobby was the courtyard where high society turned their carriages before entering the Hotel Vouillenmert. By the 1930’s the hotel was the hangout for intellectuals, surrealists and Avant guard.  Later the buildings housed the offices of Marie Claire Magazine. The beau monde still meets in the bar…cocktails are fab. The garden patio is a secret Paris gem; a wonderful place to escape from the hustle of the 8th. Service is outstanding, the madeleines a must.

Sweet Suite: The Couture Apartment high on the 7th floor because it feels oh so Parisian. The views from the balcony overlook rooftops to the domes of Sacre-Coeur and Invalides. There is a jacuzzi tub, Art Deco mosaics and lots of space.

Favorite Thing: The black and white photos throughout…most dating from the 40’s & 50’s by super stars like Horst P Horst and Irving Penn. This was the golden age of black & white fashion photography. Impossible not to strike a pose! The women preparing for a ball photo over the beds are by Cecil Beaton….reminders of a more glamourous time.
