Fox Harb’r Resort

Nova Scotia, Canada

Fox Harb’r Resort is a bit of a Canadian secret…a sprawling seaside playground on 1,100 acres overlooking Nova Scotia’s Northumberland Strait. It began with Ron Joyce, the Nova Scotia-born co-founder of Tim Hortons, who bought the land in 1987 with the idea of building a spectacular golf course where he could entertain friends. The course opened in 2000 and, as these things sometimes do when you have the means, the idea grew. Today Fox Harb’r combines golf, spa, marina, sporting lodge, private airstrip and 88 accommodations ranging from rooms and suites to enormous private villas. Despite its scale, Fox Harb’r isn’t particularly flashy. The mood is relaxed East Coast rather than grand resort glamour, with the sea and surrounding landscape doing most of the showing off. And then there are the beds…Simmons BeautyRest mattresses, premium linens, goose-down pillows and duvets. Add heated bathroom floors, Molton Brown toiletries and proper bathrobes, and Fox Harb’r gets the important details right.

The devil is in the details

Number of Rooms: There are Classic Rooms, Studio and Executive Suites, Golf Manor Suites, three and four-bedroom townhomes, Marina Landing Villas and private homes with as many as six bedrooms.

Sweet Suite: Executive Suite with an ocean-view balcony. You get a separate king bedroom and living room with fireplace, plus an enormous bathroom with heated granite floors, walk-in shower and a two-person therapeutic tub. Yes, a proper tub. Best of all, the balcony looks toward the Northumberland Strait, which is where I’d be with a glass of wine around sunset.

Favorite Thing: The sheer scale of the place. You can play golf overlooking the ocean, head to the spa, cycle, play tennis or pickleball, walk the trails or simply sit somewhere looking at the sea. The resort is also in the midst of a major golf transformation, ultimately creating 36 holes

Near By: This is not really a “pop out for a wander around town” hotel. Fox Harb’r is the destination. It sits on Nova Scotia’s Northumberland Shore, about 90 minutes from Halifax and Moncton airports. The surrounding countryside and coastline are gorgeous, but the point of staying here is to settle in and enjoy the resort.

Amenities: Golf, spa and Hydro Wellness Studio, indoor pool, hot tub and mineral pool, fitness studio, tennis and pickleball courts, walking trails, bicycles, marina, sporting activities, restaurants and lounges, in-room dining, complimentary Wi-Fi and on-property shuttle service. Rooms and suites include premium linens, robes, Molton Brown bath products and heated bathroom floors.
